CODE and CODE-Ethiopian have the pleasure to invite ETHIOPIAN authors, residing in Ethiopian to take part in Writing Competition to produce engaging and educational stories (Novel) for youth (15-18 years old)that will be published through the Burt Award for African Literature.

1) About the Award

The Burt Award for African Literature is a newly created annual award to recognize excellence in young adult fiction from Africa. The intent of the award is to generate excellent quality literature that would both contribute to one’s pride in place and nation and at the same time provide books. That is fun and entertaining to read. The Award is sponsors by CODE through the generous support of a Canadian patron, Bill Burt. This year marks the establishment of the Award in Ethiopia.

2) Criteria of Writing competiotion

The manuscripts will be reviewed by panel of judges based on the criteria set out

   1. The manuscript Shall be written in English and show the mastery and of the English language.
   2. The manuscripts should be thoughts –provoking and original
   3. The manuscripts should show creativity, readability, and suitability to adolescents and young adults (15-18 years old).
   4. The manuscripts should portray strong and admirable principal characters.
   5. The manuscripts should use humor and/or make it lively and allow for reader.
   6. The manuscripts should deploy dialogue to make it lively and allow for dramatization.
   7. The manuscripts should reflect modern realities and indicate some of the social problems which are facing adolescents and young adults in Ethiopia today.
   8. Manuscripts which have the potential to involve in to a book series or sequel will be welcome.

3) Guide to submit manuscripts

1.The length of manuscripts should be between 140-15 pages   (A4)
2. The manuscripts should be in Chapter form.
3. They should be type-written in double space.
4. The font type should be Times New Roman, and size 12 font.
5. Illustration should be suggested.
6. Deadline for submission.

All the manuscripts should be submitted to CODE-Ethiopia by April 30, 2014

6) Alrready a workshop for writers has been given by two professionals-one from Canada and the other form Addis Ababa university.Over 50 persons have shown interest to compete in the Burt Award.
